How we can help this Mouth Cancer Action Month
The 1st November marks the start of Mouth Cancer Action Month (MCAM) which takes place throughout November. The campaign was created by Oral Health Foundation which aims to address and tackle mouth cancer in the UK.
The latest figures published show there are, on average, just over 8,000 new cases of mouth cancer diagnosed in the UK each year which is ever increasing; that’s 2,000 more since last year. 22 people every day are diagnosed every day of which 2 in 3 cases are caused by smoking and 91% of cases are linked to lifestyle.
We fully support this campaign as anyone can be affected by mouth cancer (whether you have your own natural teeth or not) so that’s why a quick trip to the dentist can really save lives. By attending your regular check-up appointment your dentist plays a vital role in spotting the early warning signs along with providing advice. If mouth cancer is spotted early, the chances of a complete cure are good, and the smaller the area or ulcer the better the chance of a cure. There are also lifestyle changes that we all can make to reduce our risk of oral cancer:
- Quit smoking – you may have achieved this during the Stoptober campaign
- Reduce alcohol intake and drink responsibly
- Attend regular dental check-ups
